MDM and ETL

I am hoping some folks can comment on the impact of MDM on ETL processes, or perhaps the integration of MDM into ETL processes.  I know, it is a big generic question.  But really I think I am only looking for a high level answer.  Does MDM replace ETL, just become another part of ETL or is it really a separate line of thinking that has nothing to do with ETL.  It seems to me that they are really partners, each doing something differently very well.  Is a best practice to build an ETL on top of an MDM foundation?  Could MDM be considered, among other things, a staging database?
