DTS in SQL Server 2008 - Excel data transformation, Build Query button crashes DTS designer

We are having an issue with DTS designer running under SQL Server 2008.  I am leaving my current position and have been training my replacement.  One of my tasks is to generate text files from Excel spreadsheets that has been working without problems for the last 4+ years.  However, after setting up the ability to run and edit DTS packages on the new guy's PC, whenever he opens the transformation task and clicks the Build Query button, DTS Designer crashes, bring down SSMS with it.

I remember running across this issue a couple of years ago, when we made the move to 2008 and I found a solution that fixes the problem, but I cannot find it now  We've set up the environment correctly according to Microsoft's instructions but there is not reference to this issue.  I'm hoping someone here might have seen it and point me in the right direction, so the new guys don't have to edit the query by hand every time they run this (which is several times per day). 

Also, please don't suggest moving to SSIS; that is on the agenda, but is not feasible at this time.
