My wife came up with a good explanation to tell people what I do as a BI Consultant. Her explanation was basically that I help companies get their data in a format that helps them make good decisions. It started me to thinking that sometimes we forget what we actually are supposed to be doing when we are working. It has been said that “Discipline is remembering what you are doing.” So I thought I would try to remember and in the remembering maybe help someone else will remember, too.
First, what does BI mean? The Business part of it means that what we do should always be focused on the company mission. It is possible that in the grind of nuts and bolts coding we may need to be reminded of the bigger picture or reason that the project we are working on exists.
Second, what kind of intelligence are we talking about when we say Business Intelligence…cleverness, aptitude, intellect, non-stupidity? All of those are great but really it is more about making the best decisions that help the business or make it more productive, profitable, charitable, serviceable, or whatever the mission happens to be.
Hmm, I wonder if I am on the right track here. I’ll wait for responses and then I’ll think some more. Maybe together we can put the Business back into BI…and Intelligence would be nice, too!
Thanks honey. You were right, this timeJ.
When I first started in BI, my wife thought I wanted to do corporate espionage. Now I tell people that I help turn mountains of data into meaningful, actionable information in an effort to help my company leaders make better decisions and improve the company's performance in the marketplace
My wife tells people that I do nerdy computer stuff, but I tell people that I help companies make sense of their data in such a way that allows them to make solid, sound business decisions.
I agree totally with 1st topic. Today we are so focused in solving complex algorithms (due to complex business activities) to get the output needed and we forget to sit down on decision maker chair to think like him. It's like you say in the final, we got the business and forget the intelligence...
