Monday Morning Mistakes: Not Setting Memory Limits

3/5/2012 by sqlchicken  -  Comments: 5  -  Views: [3001]

Welcome back to another addition of Monday Morning Mistakes series. Today’s issue is one I tend to run into quite often with clients and is an important topic to know about as a database administrator. Without further ado, let’s get to our issue Issue You have SQL Server database engine installed on a system with other services such as Analysis Services, Reporting Services and/ or Integration Services and you constantly seem to run out of memory. Restarting service seems to fix the i...

February 27th, 2012. The start.

2/28/2012 by RCharCox  -  Comments: 1  -  Views: [510]

I’m going to call this my “Day 5” post. It’s taken me this long to finally decompress and be able to comprehend, really understand all the things that happened last week and all of the different things I learned. As was suggested by almost everyone I spoke with last week, though, my education is not over (of course not, I still know nothing in the grand scheme of SQL). I am breaking out my Murach book and the Intro to SQL book we received in the course, and I’m goin...

Default Bids to use VB or C#

2/28/2012 by ChrisAlbrektson  -  Comments: 1  -  Views: [1129]

As you can see below you can default Bids to use VB or C# as the default script language for your SSIS packages. This can be handy if you have a preference in your code language and always forgot to change it. If you forget to change it before you click on ‘Edit Script’ inside the script task then you will have to delete the task and add another. This option will help resolve this little annoyance. Inside of Bids click on Tools from the top menu bar then options. From there drill dow...

Let the work begin

2/27/2012 by MattMackey  -  Comments: 0  -  Views: [521]

Last Friday concluded a fun, trying, and long week of SQL training at the Pragmatic Works Foundation. Before this week the majority of my knowledge and work was in the healthcare field, but now I feel I have the starting tools to battle the SQL and IT world. Starting out writing tons of queries, making tables, finding which tables had the correct information so we could write the queries, making procedures, setting parameters and much more; to taking those queries and moving them into Visual Stu...

When Lela Met Sql

2/26/2012 by Lela  -  Comments: 5  -  Views: [729]

Pragmatic Works Foundation T-SQL Server training: Day 5- Our last day was Friday but this love story is just beginning! After five consecutive interviews, I've calloused myself for the real world, knowing heartbreak will be a big part of it. So here's the plan in the mean time...of course the trick is getting your foot in the door. 1. Create Linkedin account and start networking- check 2. Download SQL Express to my ancient laptop and pray it doesn't crash so I can keep practicing 3. Start readin...

Speaking at the SQL Lunch UK

2/24/2012 by PatrickLeBlanc  -  Comments: 0  -  Views: [1410]

Yep, that’s correct, the SQL Lunch has expanded to the UK with one slight change. Unlike the SQL Lunch that I host online here in the U.S., the SQL Lunch UK , which is hosted by Dave Bally (@davebally), will be held at a physical location. Well except for the first meeting. I have the great honor of being the first speaker. Since the presentation is in London you will have to wake up a little early (if you are in the U.S.) to catch the presentation. SQL Lunch UK Details Founder: Dave Balla...

Foundation is all you need.

2/24/2012 by RCharCox  -  Comments: 2  -  Views: [584]

Here we are. Day four of the Pragmatic Works Foundation, and we’re winding down to a close. Ok, well, “winding down” may not be the right phrase. More like “sprinting through the tape at the finish line.” A lot of review, some new stuff, too (cascading parameters, and maybe some expressions thrown into the mix). Cathy Eng, owner of Resume Rocketeer , bled her pen dry on my resume, and I retired to my home to rewrite it, hopefully enough that someone will actually re...

Dynamic Excel Sheet Creation ( expanded )

5/3/2012 by KeithHyer  -  Comments: 10  -  Views: [3736]

Edit: This is not new content. I've reposted this with corrected image links. In my previous blog post, I showed a row-by-row solution to creating an excel workbook dynamically using SSIS and populating one worksheet per row of data. Then "studio72" asked if this method could be adapted if the test data "users" had more than one row of data in the resultset as follows: Name | Age | Job John 25 IT John 34 ENG Anna 21 HR Anna 24 IT Mary 20 MFG I want the SSIS to create one excel file with sheets f...

Pragmatic Works Foundation T -SQL Server Training: Day 4- I was pleasantly surprised with a beautiful box of Samoas starring me in the face this A.M... mmmm breakfast...thanks Sherri- you have officially tapped into my weakness! Fueled by coconut chocolate goodness, we jammed through an overview of the week. I found, however, that due to my analytical nature and perfectionist ways, I've been focusing too much on the formula of queries as opposed to what is actually being queried and why. So now ...

Pragmatic Works Foundation T-SQL Server Training: Day 3- A record ten minutes from eyes open to out the door as windchimes gently sang their goodbyes. Upon arrival to class, my coffee craving takes a back seat to an exciting set of queries from last night's homework. Discussion of views and intro to stored procedures sucked us into the time warp possessed only by the tech world with its endless information. Right before lunch Sherri reminded us of Friday's interviews. She shared very useful tips...

Day three is winding down to a close and boy, what a day it was. Food poisoning or no, I am going to finish this class like a champ. Ok, so today was spent, for the majority of the day, working on stored procedures and report generation. We also went over VIEWs and took a quick look back at the multitude of joins our class seemed to struggle with at times. Overall, though, I think that the lightbulbs are coming on more often than not. Jumping right on in, then: Stored Procedures are a blast, so ...

SSIS Expression Basics: IF, Then, Else

2/22/2012 by ShawnHarrison  -  Comments: 0  -  Views: [2264]

One question I hear a lot when teaching or speaking about SSIS is ?How can I write an If, Then, Else statement?. In most cases, the expression language isn?t very intuitive, but If Then Else is quick and easy. Here is a examples of how to do this.   Let?s say I am looking at NULL values that I want to replace with something else. The expression I use would look like this.   The ?IF? section is looking for NULL values. It?s basically saying ?IF Color is NULL?. The question mark represen...

Clouds are Rolling Away

2/22/2012 by MattMackey  -  Comments: 0  -  Views: [510]

Going into day 2 yesterday I felt pretty good with where I was at with the material. As the day went on things were still looking good and I was still feeling confident. Although by the end of the day when we were working on the final problems it was like a major storm came in and I could not get out of it, not a good way to end the day. Then we came in today still feeling a little cloudy but before long I was figure things out better and more clearly. Thankfully those clouds are going away in m...

Resolving #NUM error in excel

2/22/2012 by indupriya  -  Comments: 3  -  Views: [4867]

I was using excel to display data from a cube. I tried to do a caluclated cell in excel to display number of months between two dates. Here is the formula I used to do this. =Datedif(H1,G5,"m") But I received an error -- #NUM Then I again looked at the dates entered. To make sure that the datedif function works you need to give the earlier date as the first parameter and the later date as the second parameter to avoid the #NUM error. You also need to ensure that the dates are in the correct form...

What an interesting past couple of days! Some things are starting to gel and the comraderie present in the Class of 20120220 is amazing. Thanks to those who go out of their way to assist those who take a while to gain momentum. Thanks to Sherri for your infinite patience, understanding and perserverance. Thanks to the brainiacs of the class. You'll never stand taller than when you reach down to give someone assistance. Look around and you'll see so many light bulbs coming on, it's almost blindin...

Using the Descendants Function

2/22/2012 by DustinRyan  -  Comments: 1  -  Views: [2008]

The MDX function, Descendants, is a very versatile and commonly used function that returns the members at, below, or even above a specified level. The first argument of the descendants function is a member or set expression. The second argument can either be a specific level expression or a number indicating the number of levels to travel. The following queries return the same results: With Member [Measures].[ Level Name] AS [ Date ].[Calendar].CURRENTMEMBER. LEVEL .NAME Select {[Measures].[ Lev...

2/22/2012 by TamMichau  -  Comments: 3  -  Views: [587]

I left out of my second day of class with Pragamatic Works Foundation today feeling like I did know anything at all....wondering if I still had what it took to be in this field. Decided I would take a break and give this tired brain a rest, had dinner, spent some time with family and then sat down to do my homework only to realize, I might actually understand this stuff, but I just might not be as quick as everyone else. I may have to ask sherri tomorrow for some extra queries to work on at home...

2/22/2012 by RCharCox  -  Comments: 5  -  Views: [596]

Well, it’s 8:30 on Tuesday, and “Day Two” of my foray into the TSQL world has come to a close. Today was an interesting day. At times, I felt like I was on top of the subject matter, and then something came along and made me realize I’m not quite there yet. By the way, today’s best practice is to make sure you’re operating in the correct database. MS SQL Server Management Studio isn’t smart enough to read your mind. However, I think we all came through i...

Pragmatic Works Foundation T -SQL Server Training: Day 2- An amazing sunrise winked my direction as I headed over the St. Johns River to class nice and early. Turns out I wasn't the only one as thankfully everyone was confused by our homework and wanted to get started right away. Last night's frustration was for naught; we weren't even in the correct database! Wahhhhhh ... I did manage to work with what I had and picked up some new bits of info that actually aided in queries this morning. Oh, gr...

Server Explorer - Database Explorer

2/21/2012 by nube07  -  Comments: 2  -  Views: [1076]

Server Explorer (in Visual Studio Express Server Explorer is called Database Explorer) is a handy tool within BIDS. I have founded interesting that it will allow me to create and modify tables from existing DB connections, but it didn’t allow me to rename my tables. The only way I could rename a table was by going to SSMS and renamed my table there. Since the connection was modified in SSMS, my table disappeared from the Server Explorer connection in BIDS. However, after deleting the DB co...
