Print formulas from Excel

1/31/2011 by indupriya  -  Comments: 1  -  Views: [3041]

Yesterday I had a requirement to compare formulas between two sheets. So I wanted to print the formulas and compare. This is a basic feature but I straight away did not know how to do it. So I started investigating the ribbon in Excel 2007. After about 2-3 minutes Voila I found this. Under Formulas Tab -- There was Show Formulas button in the Formulas Auditing Group as shown below. This button works as a toggle for showing and hiding the formulas.

2/6/2011 by briankmcdonald  -  Comments: 0  -  Views: [1964]

All, ** 2/6/2011 updated link below ** Since SQL Server Reporting Services 2005 came out, I have been working very close within the BIDS environment and every other aspect of Reporting Services to include the architecture. With the many changes that we saw between 2005 and 2008 R2, I have compiled a boot camp style presentation and have delivered it many times to completely filled (and some even hanging out along the sides, backs and the doorways of many) SQL Server community events. I have poli...

Debuging in .NET- Making life Simpler

1/31/2011 by priti1desai  -  Comments: 2  -  Views: [633]

Have you guys ever felt like pulling your hair, just because you aren’t able to figure out what’s wrong with your long long and longer code? Where the logic keeps flowing like a river though your project.. Well this is what happened to me.. Seem to be lost to find out what went wrong with the code, when suddenly there was a page not found error occurring after I click on a search button in PW site. For someone who is very new, I would say just keep learning from your seniors and keep googling. I...

I've been in Alabama

2/4/2011 by AdamJorgensen  -  Comments: 0  -  Views: [1228]

Let me start of by saying I could have taken this picture in Florida. But I didn’t. I was in Alabama. Folks – we’re not helping our stereotype here in the south. In the meantime I was working with a cool client who is delivering BI as part of their application. I had found Birmingham to be a cool city with some really neat parts. Mostly the really nice lobby of the Hilton I stay in and the rental car facilities . I know some of you have wondered why I’m behind on posting comments and have only d...

1/30/2011 by AdamJorgensen  -  Comments: 0  -  Views: [1173]

Hey Everyone – SQL Rally Voting opens today for the BI Track. There are lots of good sessions and at the risk of being self promotional I thought I would share that my Summit spotlight Zero to Cube session was top five in it’s track and the 23rd session overall at the summit. IT is a LOT of fun and the way I present it is like NOTHING you’ve ever seen!. We’ll have some real fun. Here are some real comment from folks who attended my session at the Summit: “Best Session at the Summit So Far” (Seco...

Invest in Yourself

2/2/2011 by AdamJorgensen  -  Comments: 0  -  Views: [1443]

Hey folks. I think we can all agree that there is some really quality trai ning available for free on the web for SQL Server. Many of you take advantage of this but I still get to many clients who have no idea what is out there. This includes even such staples as who Paul Randal is or that youtube has over 5000 videos tagged SQL Server. So there are tons of sites to go get information to invest in yourself. I think this guy would agree you’re long over due. There are also SQL Saturday’s nd other...

Now that everyone else said it – I’m an MVP!

1/29/2011 by AdamJorgensen  -  Comments: 0  -  Views: [1054]

They say to save the best for last and while I’m not so sure about that I was truly honored to be awarded as a SQL Server MVP from Microsoft for 2011. I know many in the community who are deserving and did not get this honor and all I can do is remind you that you’re not doing it to get a blue square, you’re doing it because you want to do the things you do for the community. I’m very excited about the opportunities this will give me for more access and exciting Non-NDA things to share with what...

Lookup with Different Data Type

1/28/2011 by timmurphy  -  Comments: 1  -  Views: [3463]

In SSIS you might have occasion like I did to do a Lookup that needs to match data of different types. Here is the error you may get when you try to map the lookup column. There are a couple of ways you can fix this. One possibility is to convert the data by using the Data Conversion Transformation. The other way is to use CAST in your SQL query for the Lookup (assuming you are using the Best Practice of a SQL query).

The JEBacaniSQLDude Rant – SQL Training, January 2011, aka Name Dropping

1/28/2011 by JEBacaniSQLDude  -  Comments: 2  -  Views: [850]

With 2011, I am keeping track of what training I participated in that was provided by the SQL Server Professional Community, whether it’s in person or via the web. This is mainly a personal log but I figure after a few months and even by the end of 2011, this will amount to a lot. Now, by all means, this does not mean I am an instant expert on the topics below. No way, no how. But at the least, I can refer to this list and the forthcoming lists in the month ahead, and see where I can go to for m...

Microsoft Visual SourceSafe Buttons

1/28/2011 by timmurphy  -  Comments: 1  -  Views: [1708]

There are a few tasks that I find myself using all the time when I’m on a project using MS Visual SourceSafe. I discovered that you can add buttons to your BIDS environment to suit your needs. Simply right click in a blank area on the menu and select Source Control. This will add all the buttons for Source Control. Then you can click on the drop down button and remove items you don’t want cluttering up your environment. The four I use all the time are Check In, Undo Check Out, Refresh Status, an...

The JEBacaniSQLDude Rant – To be or not to be a CIO…

My fellow SQL Server and IT Professionals!... I have a dream… Do you aspire to be a CIO one day?... Do you aspire to lead your own IT division or company?... If so, I recommend checking out CIO ( LinkedIn | Facebook | Twitter ). I myself am subscribed to their CIO Insider , CIO Leader , CIO News Watch , and CIO Strategy and Innovation emails. Sure, I am not a CIO, and I am probably a bit far from it, but the emails offer links to articles from an executive IT perspective. It’s a free subscriptio...

SQL Server Reporting Services - Green bar matrix report

1/27/2011 by domhorton  -  Comments: 0  -  Views: [4733]

Here's how I've created a 'green-bar' style cross-tab/matrix report. I'm basing the new report on this one: 1) Create an inner row grouping, in this case named 'Count' and given a grouping expression of =1 2) for the cell 'Count', set the property Value =iif(RunningValue(Fields!REFERENCE.Value, CountDistinct , Nothing ) Mod 2, "PowderBlue" , "White" ) 3) for the cell 'Count', set the property BackgroundColor =value 4) for the matrix data cell, named 'STATUS', set the property BackgroundColor =Re...

SSAS Dimension Attribute Discretization Methods

1/27/2011 by DevinKnight  -  Comments: 7  -  Views: [4731]

Discretization (one of my favorite tech words to say J ) is a really great feature of Analysis Services that is often forgotten. Basically what discretization does is it can take a dimension attribute and automatically place its members in buckets for you. For example, if you have a product dimension that has an attribute for price you could create buckets for price instead of listing every distinct value. To set this property you select the attribute to configure and open the properties menu. T...

SSRS Switch Function Examples

1/26/2011 by ChrisAlbrektson  -  Comments: 0  -  Views: [28217]

Hello Bidn, Below I’m going to show you a few quick examples of how to use the Switch function within SSRS expressions. In the first example we will change the font color based on the quantity of units sold. Green will be a quantity of 20,000 +, Black will be a quantity of 10,000 +, and everything less than 10,000 will be displayed as Red. To do something like this go to the properties of the selected cell in the table and then go to Font/Color. On the drop down list for color, choose expression...

Enity Framwork: Drag and Drop O.R.M

1/25/2011 by Bevans  -  Comments: 1  -  Views: [659]

What is the Entity Framework? The entity framework is an object relational mapper. What is that? Well it provides an abstraction with database development. By pretty much automatically handling database calls and object persistence without the developer having to worry about the details. By generating both the objects and handling persistence it takes a tremendous load off the developer. But quickly I wanted to mention one cool feature in 4.0, which is Dynamic Entities. With the new dynamic CLR ...
