Hello Devin,

Nice post, that was the simple and clear description regarding the keyColumns property. Also, I think it will be more tune-up if we define the Attribute Relationships of Date dimension hierarchy as Rigid or Flexible as appropriate, doesn’t it Devin ?

Thanks,

Anil Maharjan

Excellent piece Devin and spot on about the difficulty in understanding (my second time back here). Keep up the good work.

Thank you for this article and the one on attribute relationships. You made mysterious subjects simple.

Hi Devin, Can't find the place to post a question so I'll post one here if you dont mind: If I dont have changing dimensions but do have late arriving members, should I use a surrogate keys (with the SCD Wizard) or is there a way of dealing with late members in a dimension table which has composite keys?

Forums is probably the best place for this. Surrogate keys are going to help you in a variety of other ways too (maybe a good blog post because I could write multiple pages here :) ). I don't design a data warehouse or data mart without using surrogate keys.

I tried the forums but couldn't find the place to post new question and was in a rush:-) But excellent, that was the answer I was expecting and hoping for. But would be fantastic if you could post something stating the merits of each to help people like us (yes realise I am asking a lot). Just wasn't sure why we didn't use surrogate keys at work given the benefits (and we paid top dollars to do it too, though this was back in 2005). Anyway, thanks again. And the 24 Hour Series are fantastic, keep up the great work...(am in accountancy by trade and BI second so don't have as much background though BI increasingly important )
